The 'Zenbleed' bug specifically hits AMD's Zen 2 line. The bug can expose user data in some cases. No corrections will be made until the 4th quarter of this year. Yesterday, a Google security researcher named Tavis Ormandy posted a blog can run about 30 kb per second on a single core. AMD describes this as a medium-level problem . The AMD EPYC processor sits in its socket (Image credit: AMD) AMD explained in simple terms how the process actually works: Under specific microarchitecture conditions, the register on "Zen 2" CPUs may not be properly written to 0. This could cause data from another process and/or thread to be stored in the YMM registry, which could allow an attacker to gain access to sensitive data. AMD Tavis Ormandy notes that he notified AMD of this "Zenbleed" vulnerability on May 15, 2023, and that AMD has already released a microcode update for the affected processors.
Your BIOS or Operating System vendors may already have an update available that includes this microcode update. It should be noted that there is also the possibility that this will incur performance costs. The fix is mainly for AMD EPYC "Rome" processors that have just been released. Ryzen 2000/3000//4000/5000/7020 users will unfortunately have to wait a long time and fixes should arrive by November/December at the earliest. Plans to provide a software solution for those unable to implement microcode updates.
